Boedi Sentosa — The Vision
In 2014, Indonesian businessman and philanthropist Boedi Sentosa visited Siberut through the Buat Mentawai Bangga scholarship programme. Confronted by the island's extraordinary natural beauty alongside significant poverty and absence of basic services, he conceived a comprehensive, long-term development plan. It took a decade to find the right partner to build it with.

Jaime Terauds — The Architecture
Jaime Terauds of ilipa Ventures Group had spent 23 years living and working in Southeast Asia — long enough to witness firsthand how ambitious developments had eroded the natural beauty of destinations across the region. When Boedi's vision and Jaime's programme architecture met in 2024, the result was a partnership that could match the ambition of the island with the rigour to protect it.
Built to Outlast Its Founders
The Mentawai One governance architecture is designed specifically so that the programme's mission does not depend on the continued involvement of its founders. The nine-member Legacy Trust, independent B Corp auditors, the Court of Chancery, and the Conservation Covenant together create a system of accountability that runs without the founders needing to be in the room.
