Mentawai One
24.5°C SIBERUT ISLAND

For Residents

Living on Siberut is not a lifestyle choice made lightly or casually approved. Residency within the Mentawai One SEZ is governed by a structured vetting and visa framework designed to protect the island's community character, its environmental integrity, and the interests of those already living here. We are building a community, not a retreat.

The Performance-Bond Visa

Entry into the island's resident programme requires a performance bond of US$5,000 — a refundable deposit held for the duration of residency and returned in full on departure, provided residency conditions have been met. The bond is not a revenue mechanism. It is a commitment device: a signal that the resident has skin in the game and has made a considered decision to participate in the community. The bond is forfeited only in the event of material breach of the resident code of conduct — environmental offences, repeated community violations, or conduct found incompatible with the community's values. In practice, forfeiture is rare.

Selection

Five-Tier Vetting

The vetting process for residency applicants proceeds through five sequential stages: identity and background verification, financial sustainability assessment, values alignment interview, community contribution proposal, and final board review. No stage is perfunctory. The values alignment interview in particular is a genuine conversation conducted by a panel including both island management representatives and community members. Applicants from all nationalities, income levels, and professional backgrounds are welcome to apply — the vetting surfaces character and contribution potential, not credentials or wealth.

Who We Welcome

Resident Profiles We Are Looking For

The island is designed to support a diverse permanent community. We seek digital nomads and remote workers prepared to commit to the community for a minimum residency period; tech entrepreneurs and startup founders drawn by the GIBFC sandbox and MentEx infrastructure; wellness practitioners who contribute to the island's resident health ecosystem; researchers, marine biologists, and conservation scientists whose work aligns with the environmental mission; and families committed to long-term island residence whose children benefit from the island's educational ecosystem.

Daily Life

The 15-Minute City for Residents

The island's 15-minute city design is built as much for residents as for visitors. Daily essentials — grocers, pharmacies, GP and dental clinics, childcare, and laundry — are within five minutes of every residential zone. Community services — schools, fitness facilities, and specialist medical care — are within ten. Cultural venues, beaches, academies, and the full range of dining and entertainment are within fifteen. Car ownership is unnecessary. Commuting does not exist. The street is returned to the people who live on it.

Apply for Residency

Residency applications open on a rolling basis as community capacity permits. Applications are submitted through the ilipa Connect platform. All applications receive an initial response within ten working days.
