Science atthe Source

Reef Labs, the Siberut Primate Research Centre, and the Mentawai Institute of Natural Sciences will establish the island as a global hub for endemic species research - studying what cannot be found anywhere else.

Reef Labs

Marine Science Education in the World's Most Biodiverse Waters.

Reef Labs will train marine biologists, coral reef restoration specialists, and conservation scientists in an environment that no classroom or aquarium can replicate. Marine biology and ecology, coral monitoring and restoration, underwater photography, marine conservation policy, freediving and scientific diving certification, and blue carbon accounting - with student research feeding directly into MCF conservation data and the Ocean Intelligence Platform.

Siberut Primate Research Centre

Four Species Found Nowhere Else on Earth.

Siberut is home to four endemic primate species - the Mentawai macaque, pig-tailed langur, Kloss's gibbon, and Mentawai leaf monkey - found nowhere else on the planet. The Siberut Primate Research Centre will establish the island as a globally significant hub for primate conservation research, with long-term field studies that contribute to international conservation science and build the evidence base for expanded national park protection.

Mentawai Institute of Natural Sciences

Flora and Fauna That Has Never Been Fully Documented.

Siberut's biodiversity remains largely undocumented - the Mentawai Institute of Natural Sciences will begin to change that. Flora and fauna surveys, endemic species cataloguing, ethnobotanical research integrating traditional Mentawai plant knowledge, and long-term ecological monitoring. The institute will integrate indigenous knowledge alongside conventional scientific methodology - treating traditional ecological understanding as data, not anecdote.
